Nokia E90 Communicator with Apple Safari as mobile web browser
Posted 2007-10-30 in Mobile Web by Johann.
As it turns out, the Nokia E90 Communicator has Safari as its mobile browser. Of course the E90 doesn’t look like the iPhone at all, but at least the same browser is there.
From what I remember, Nokia had used an own browser in the past. Even though I have no actual experience with Safari, I’m sure it is a better browser than the old Nokia and the other commonly encountered mobile browsers.
User Agent
The E90’s user agent string is Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaE90-1/07.24.0.3; Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413
.
Log entries
The requests made by the Safari browser when loading my home page.
"GET / HTTP/1.1" … "GET /misc/style.js HTTP/1.1" … "GET /misc/handheld.css HTTP/1.1" … "GET /misc/screen.css HTTP/1.1" … "GET /blog/?flavor=simple&entries=1 HTTP/1.1" …
While the Safari-based browser supports JavaScript, it loads style sheets for the handheld
and screen
media type which reminds me of IEMobile and NetFront.
I might do another statistic about mobile browser usage in a few months and see what has changed in the mobile CSS and JavaScript world.
Lovepedal pedal list
Posted 2007-10-28 in Effects by Johann.
When I still was a Lovepedal fan, I collected information about the various Love pedal pedals.
Since some of Sean Dunigan’s pedals are minor modifications of existing circuits (Eternity – Son of a Screamer, COT50 – Electra distortion) and there are some really bad Lovepedals (the Lovepedal Black Magic comes to mind), coupled with his childish outbreaks and disinterest in his own pedals, I lost interest in Lovepedal pedals a while ago.
Lovepedal list
This mind map contains information about the following pedals:
- Eternity

- COT50 Gold
- FAB50

My LovePedals
I had a bunch of LovePedals over time:
I still have two COT50, one white Eternity and a Balance pedal.
Additions
You can add something to the Lovepedal pedal list mind map. To open this file, you need the FreeMind mind-mapping software. Add something and send it back to me.

Pushme Pullyou – simple DIY octaver, slightly modded
Posted 2007-10-22 in Effects by Johann.
So I experimented with various transistor types in the Pushme Pullyou which is a simple DIY full-wave rectifier designed by Tim Escobedo. I finally settled on a 2N5089 (NPN Silicon) and a low-gain AC128 (PNP Germanium) transistors in the rectification stage.
The AC128 sounded nice, with a bit more dirt and “Germanium feel” than the AC125 that I also tried. The differences were subtle however.
Modifications
The mods I made to the original circuit:
- No bypass cap.
- 2 2N5089 transistors, 1 AC128.
- 0.047 µF input and output capacitors.
- No 470 Ω resistor.
- 4.7 µF capacitors in the rectifier.
The Pushme Pullyou verboard layout I used. The 1 K gain pot and the 50 K output volume pot aren’t included.
Pick test 2: Pickboy Edge Nylon, Dunlop Tortex, Heriba 133, D’Andrea Jetex
Posted 2007-10-20 in Guitar by Johann.
After my first pick test, I got some more guitar picks. Let’s see how they stack up to the ones I tested before.
Pickboy Edge Nylon
The Pickboy Edge Nylon has the same size as the Pickboy Edge Carbon that I like a lot. The material is a transparent Nylon, obviously.
Compared to the Edge Carbon guitar picks of the same size, the Nylons flex a lot more. Due to the sharp edge, the pick attack is similar to the Carbon picks but sounds like most Nylon picks sound.
D’Andrea Jetex
The Jetex picks feature a textured backside. The grip feeling is very good although the sound tends to be on the rounder, darker side. Because of the rounded tip, these probably aren’t perfect for tremolo playing. The output level is rather high, even with the thin 0.5 mm model.
Heriba 133
The Heriba 133 is larger than the Edge picks, about the size of a regular Dunlop Nylon pick, just thicker and heavier. The output level is high and I think they really work well for edgier music. The harder you pick with these, the better it sounds. That effect is not as pronounced with the Edge Carbon.
Dunlop Tortex
The Dunlop Tortex picks feature a very sharp tip. I couldn’t imagine playing really fast with them. The attack is rather round and relaxed. As far as guitar picks go, they aren’t my favourite.
